What is UI Design?

I’m so glad you asked! UI is short for User Interface or User Interaction. I am the guy that takes the problem you are trying to solve and comes up with an attractive solution that’s easy to use. On the other hand, brand design is where I help create an identity and establish a look and feel that people identify with. Throughout my career, I have been able to create packaging, applications, software interfaces, identity packages, and more.

Givelify

At Givelify, (pronounced Give li fi),  I worked as a Senior Designer. Givelify is a donation giving app mainly used by churches and some charitable organizations.I worked on redesigning the UI/UX on the admin dashboard where churches managed their donation activity. Problems I helped solve included helping organizations track donations and various types of data points, perform tasks like comparing and reconciling financial data and donations, visualizing trends and patterns in donations, and present data to the admin user in a meaningful and impactful way. Ongoing testing and prototyping designs to ensure we were designing a better experience using UserTesting.com, and working with some of our bigger accounts as well as some of the smaller ones to get their feedback. The second half of my role transitioned into the marketing team during a intense growth period to help carry the day to day needs of marketing.

Red Ventures

I was hired at Red Ventures as a Sr. UI designer. My work for them was focused on developing e-commerce buy flows that helped maximize sales for their tel-co and communications partners. The companies I was directly responsible for was Xfinity, DirecTV, Spectrum, and a few other energy companies in some markets where people select energy/electricity plants. Additionally I was responsible for designing the website and market place for Allconnect, which was a marketplace for selling and promoting TV/Internet service plans. I was responsible for creating and maintaining design systems and component libraries and working within existing brands and guidelines for these companies. A portion of the work also included improving designs to help meet ADA standards. I also mentored Jr Designers and met with data teams to review designs and pivot on new designs to continuously improve conversion.  Red Ventures is a large agency bringing in over 10 Billion a year in revenue.

Blender Bottle

My role at Blender Bottle as a senior designer was multi-faceted took on many responsibilities. The bulk of my work centered on website redesigns, creating better processes for creating concept art for products and renderings, refine the brand and develop new looks for packaging and POS displays, and design support for sales teams working with large retail opportunities. Other work included the dye-lines for custom packaging, design, photography, and renderings. Much of that work was used to help secure and maintain accounts where product was sold and on display in stores such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Costco, Walmart, GNC, and more. I was also responsible for overseeing the new design and UI/UX for the new e-commerce websites of Blender Bottle as well as their sister companies Avana, and Whiskware. Overall, the work I did with UI/UX and brand development helped lean more towards a humanized lifestyle approach while not appearing “pushy and sales focused”, well thought out and effective.

Additionally I also worked with jr. and mid-level designers to help work more efficiently and navigate corporate structure, actively take part in campaigns, create 3D rendering templates to quickly mock up new product color schemes and concepts.

Blendtec

I was hired on at Blendtec to be a Senior Designer and helped out with maintain, update, and develop their national and international packaging and promotions, including print material sent out with their world class blenders. I was also tasked with helping photograph the blenders and help photograph weekly recipes, which were part of the marketing strategy. Although Blendtec makes arguably the best blenders in the world, they encountered some financial challenges shortly after I was hired. The company went through some huge layoffs putting me in the position to help support the brands needs, and move into a full time roll of developing the look and feel for their Network Marketing sister company called Blendfresh – a patented fresh dried fruits and vegetables in powder form that maintain all the nutritional value of fresh food.

Runner Agency

Runner Agency is a digital agency based in Texas that today specializes in medical related digital marketing. I was the primary designer for about 2.5 – 3 years as a freelance remote designer. I helped redesign their clients websites and brand refresh. Some UI/UX work involved in the website designs, print work, trade show displays, and more. I helped not only Runner with their branding and promotional work, but also many of their clients. Some of those clients are: Beaird Solutions, NJ Spine & Ortho, Thermi, North American Spine, Q Spine Institute, Meditract, Champey, Robert Raymond Group, and more.

Dynactive Software

I was hired at Dynactive to be the Art Director and UX/UI designer for their LMS(learning management software). They had created a system of teaching content through gamification making it easy for users to learn large amounts of content. The owner sold the the original company (Career Step) she made based on this idea. Dynactive was a newer updated version of this concept and the system was built starting with the Ground School portion of getting a pilots license. This 900+ page course was turned into a gamified experience. The high-level part of my role was to take the existing software and make tweaks to make it mobile friendly, and then to design the back end portion of the system where admins load, create, build their content or courses. This process was a two year long process that required in-depth research, testing, and vetting to make sure the app worked and. made sense from a usability perspective. Sadly, the company got to market late and never took hold before it could get a strong footing in the market. Additionally the company encountered some struggles that caused it to shut the operation down.
